18.08.2021 Kundendaten bei T-Mobile USA "abhanden gekommen"

The top priority is profit

... and the company's share price. This is how one article describes T-Mobile USA's silence about the loss of over 100 million customer records. Actually, a German company that is subject to the European General Data Protection Regulation should also pay attention to other priorities.

What is certain, in any case, is that the company has had the private data of more than 100 million people stolen. The perpetrator is currently in the process of selling some of the data. The website Vice reports an anonymous author of a forum post offered about a third of T-Mobile USA's customer data in exchange for 6 Bitcoins (about $280,000). Vice has reviewed some of the data and confirmed its authenticity.

The data collection includes

  •     Names,
  •     addresses,
  •     phone numbers,
  •     social security numbers,
  •     driver's license data and
  •     IMEI numbers unique to each mobile device.

T-Mobile USA customers should definitely be on the lookout for suspicious activity on their accounts. Otherwise, we can only keep pointing out that no data collection can be 100% secure - that was also the conclusion of our event yesterday, "My data should not be a commodity!"
