Commemorating children killed by drones

The Drones Quilt Project is an art exhibition from the USA on the still largely secret US drone war. The exhibition consists of six patchwork quilts, each made from 36 blocks of fabric. They have been sewn, embroidered and painted by concerned US citizens. Each block of fabric commemorates a child killed by a US combat drone, whose name was identified through meticulous research on the ground in Pakistan and Yemen by the respected British NGO, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

It has been known in Germany since 2013 that the US Air Force Base Ramstein near Kaiserslautern and the Pentagon Africa Command (Africom) in Stuttgart play important roles in illegal US drone killings (so-called “targeted killings”) in Africa and the Middle East.

The exhibition was brought to Germany by Elsa Rassbach, German-American filmmaker, journalist, peace activist of the “drone campaign”. She comments:

“Now the German government wants to procure armed drones for the Bundeswehr, but the majority of the German population is against it, and many are resisting. To mark this current occasion, a US peace organization has sent me six of the patchwork quilts for exhibitions in Germany. The issue has a strong personal meaning for me as a US citizen. That is why I have been working on this issue since 2012, in cooperation with German organizations and groups such as Attac, IPPNW, DFG-VK, CODEPINK in Germany, Friedensratschlag and the Berlin Peace Coordination.” I am therefore delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit the quilts.

This exhibition contains six fabric quilts that should be shown in public places, for example in town halls, community centers, municipalities or similar places. If you would like to designate such a place and host the exhibition, please let us know at kontakt[at]drohnen-quilts.de
