Heise introduces the NetGuard firewall
For decades we have got used to having a firewall on our PC at home (and even more so at work) to protect us against attacks from the net. But what happens on the mobile phone or tablet?
There, too, we should have a firewall that we can influence. We want to decide for ourselves which data traffic is useful to us and we want to prevent our data from simply "flowing off". Heise has recently examined the NetGuard firewall app, which we can use to specifically block Internet access to Android apps or even just monitor it.
Some apps really need internet access, but many apps and games only use the connection to report user behavior to tracking companies or to reload advertising - and we should stop that.
In the article "Firewall for Android-Apps: Avoiding Tracking, Advertising and Co" Heise had already introduced the free "Firewall without Root" by Grey Shirts in detail. Currently, the article is about the open source app NetGuard by Marcel Bokhorst. After installing NetGuard, you are shown which app wants Internet access and can allow or forbid it.
This is how a firewall should work - memories of one of the first firewalls under Windows, the Tiny Firewall, come back to life ...
