Disarm instead of rearm!
"Escalate until it explodes" seems to be the motto of the West. Even the soon-to-be former US President Biden is striking a final chord at the end of his term in office by giving Ukraine a free hand in the use of the missiles and F-16 fighter jets supplied. This decision has immediately prompted war enthusiasts in Germany to call for Taurus cruise missiles for Ukraine, which would also put the Russian capital within range.
Equally suicidal was the decision at the NATO meeting in the summer to station US medium-range missiles in Germany – without first discussing this with the countries affected. Once again, the same warmongers celebrated this by comparing it to NATO's 1979 double-track decision, which they believe successfully "armed the Soviet Union to death."
In doing so, they overlook an important part of the term "dual decision." The NATO dual decision of 1979 was linked to an offer to negotiate. The current decision is the opposite of an offer; it is a nail in the coffin for arms control and agreements such as the New START Treaty and contains no offers for talks whatsoever.
Campaign against medium-range weapons launched
Because the federal government has failed to implement important projects contrary to its coalition agreement, such as an arms export control law, and because minors continue to be recruited by the Bundeswehr, and because the federal government has instead increased defense spending and purchased new nuclear bombers and armed drones, and is even pushing for arms exports to war zones in Ukraine and Israel, it is time for the German peace movement to make its voice heard again.
That is why 33 peace organizations launched a campaign in early November against the deployment of land-based US medium-range systems in Germany. "The decision to station medium-range weapons in Germany is a threat to peace in Europe," warn the participating organizations, including the Peace Cooperative Network. In the campaign entitled "Peace-capable instead of first-strike capable – for a Europe without medium-range weapons!", the participating organizations want to raise awareness of the risks and build political pressure to reverse the decision to station the weapons.
Unlike the so-called rearmament in the 1980s, which brought millions onto the streets in protest, the risk associated with the current deployment is not shared by different countries. Germany is the only European NATO country where these weapons are to be deployed. This means that the people of Germany are the sole target of a potential counterstrike.
The campaign's demands are as follows:
- A halt to the planned deployment of new US medium-range systems in Germany.
- A termination of projects to develop Europe's own hypersonic weapons and cruise missiles, in which Germany intends to participate.
- Dialogue instead of armament: The resumption of negotiations on arms control and (nuclear) disarmament (e.g., for a multilateral follow-up agreement to the INF Treaty)

Atomkrieg wegen ATACMS?
