..., the Action Alliance for the Abolition of All Nuclear Weapons, points out that the 2010 New START Treaty is set to expire tomorrow (February 5, 2026). New START had set the number of nuclear warheads for both sides at 1,550 and the number of delivery systems at 800. After the 1987 INF Treaty on the elimination of medium-range weapons was terminated by the US in 2019, the New START Treaty remained the last agreement limiting nuclear weapons.
Due to the end of the last nuclear arms limitation treaty, scientists at the renowned Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight once again last week. There are now only 85 seconds to midnight. atomwaffenfrei.jetzt emphasizes: "The threat to the world posed by the nuclear arms race was a decisive factor in the decision to readjust the Doomsday Clock. This makes our commitment to disarmament and a world without nuclear weapons all the more urgent!"
The ICAN Germany team also demands that "the US and Russia immediately resume serious negotiations on new, binding arms control agreements. Until then, both states must voluntarily adhere to the existing limitations. In the long term, the expiration of New START once again demonstrates the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to nuclear disarmament, as offered by the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. ... With the expiration of the treaty, these legally binding limits will no longer apply. The two countries with the largest nuclear arsenals in the world will then no longer be obliged to limit or disclose the size and composition of their strategic nuclear forces. This increases the risk of miscalculations, escalations, and new arms races."

Kommentar: RE: 20260204 Nur 85 Sekunden bis Mitternacht
We are closer to global catastrophe than ever before, Dr. Rainer: Closer than during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Closer than the height of the Cold War in the 1980s. Closer than at the start of the nuclear arms race in 1953.
The Doomsday Clock is now just 85 seconds away from "midnight" — global disaster — according to experts at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
One thing is clear: Instead of de-escalation and diplomacy, Trump and others are choosing recklessness that puts all of us at risk. Like just days ago, when the Administration allowed New START, the last bilateral nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russian governments, to expire.
This backward thinking only accelerates a race to the bottom that has deadly consequences for all of humanity. That’s why Win Without War is working day in, day out to turn back the clock.
