Politicians have been asleep at the wheel and have glossed over the violent acts of right-wing extremists. Now, state elections are coming up in Saxony-Anhalt in September, and polls show the AfD as the strongest party. Why?

Ten years ago, we read the AfD’s party platform and election manifesto and asked why reasonable people are drawn to statements like:

The EU's external borders are to be completely closed, just like Germany's borders, where “uncontrolled immigration” is taking place.
“Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, but an indispensable component of all life.” It does not harm the climate, but rather benefits plant growth.
Nuclear power plants make sense

Daily commuters at the German-Polish border certainly disagree. Today, we — and hopefully tens of thousands of others — will take to the streets to protest these two environmentally nonsensical demands. We will not combat high gas and oil prices by increasing carbon dioxide in the air, nor will we bring back the many cancer victims by creating more radioactive waste.

New demands are no better either

The demands from the current election platform in Saxony-Anhalt can really only elicit a shake of the head:

abolish compulsory education,
deport foreign female doctors,
dismantle public broadcasting.

Points 1 and 3 promote ignorance, and point 2 could alleviate the pension problem by lowering our life expectancy. Although not mentioned in the list, the “promotion of repatriation” of all non-German people naturally remains a long-term goal of the party. Ten years ago, the AfD said it wanted to stop the “rapid settlement of Europe, and especially Germany, by people from other cultures and parts of the world.” Today, the party is calling for their return in a far more radical manner, if only to position itself to the right of the CDU/CSU.

Ban the AfD now! Before it’s too late — the U.S. under Trump has shown how quickly democratic rights can be eroded...
