03.02.2019 Wettbewerb ums strengste Abtreibungsverbot

Strict, more strict, most strict

It seems that a competition has broken out who has the strictest abortion law on the way. It was 2 years ago Poland (Polen beschließt komplettes Abtreibungsverbot) and at the beginning of the Trump era Mississippi  (Konservative wollen Frauenrechte definieren), now it is the "clean state" of Colorado.

Anti-choice politicians in Colorado have introduced what might be the most extreme anti-choice bill ever. The bill bans abortion at the moment of conception. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.  And the penalty? Life in prison or the death penalty.

With Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, the far right anti-choice movement has been emboldened like we've never seen. We're gearing up to fight back against abortion bans state by state wherever they pop up. The minute Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed for the Supreme Court, anti-choice state legislators started working to take advantage and ban abortion in their states.

In Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and South Carolina, they're pushing to ban abortion at six weeks. In West Virginia and Oklahoma, they want to go further, banning abortion from the moment of  conception. Anti-choice politicians proposed the death penalty for abortion last year in Ohio and Idaho. Now it's popping up again in Colorado. The Colorado legislature is currently controlled by Democrats, but even if it doesn't    pass, it makes slightly less extreme abortion bans seem moderate by comparison.

Before Brett Kavanaugh was put on the Supreme Court, we could simply count on the courts to strike down abortion bans like Colorado's "death penalty for abortion" bill.  Those days are over.

Since 1973, Roe v. Wade has guaranteed that abortion rights were protected by the constitution, but Kavanaugh has openly praised the dissent in Roe, and four other current justices on the court have voted to uphold restrictions that would end abortion entirely in many states by effectively shutting down every clinic.

Would they also allow states to ban abortion at six weeks or earlier?
